corroded-dreams:

Uh. Thanks.

It’s a bit empty, but.

You sit down on your chair and spin a bit, watching Oreko rest.

Sorry about that, Na - Oreko.. All the smoke.

pfft, my place is way emptier

if i didn’t have the machine it would just be full of a bunch of junk

Noticing how she hesitated on her name, she turns her head to look at Sabi.

nanami? you can still call me that, you know

She smiles reassuringly.

and that’s ok, i wouldn’t want to have missed that just because my lungs suck

…That’s true, I guess.

You should get more things to fill it up.

Like maybe flowers from the garden or something.

You nod and let out a breath.

Okay. Nanami.

Saying her name brings back a lot of old memories.

..Yeah. Still. You should get some rest. Let your lungs get a bit better.

This may not be the best place for that.

that’s a good idea! can the flowers live underwater?

Being called by her real name feels strange, but it’s a good strange. She grins.

it’s alright i’ll be fine

the only way to make them any stronger is to breathe real air anyway

corroded-dreams:

fukaiumi:

corroded-dreams:

Yeah. Used to be.

…Something else, yeah. I don’t know who’d name their kid Smile.

You nod and activate your arms effect, waving goodbye to little you, who turns invisible at the sight of all your arms and runs off into the snow. You sigh before transporting the two of you two the Nexus, where you bring Oreko inside your room.

It’s sparse and mostly empty, but whatever.

Uh. Here we are.

She hugs the younger Sabi and whispers “thank you” to her just before the real Sabi transforms and transports them.

Upon arriving in Sabi’s room, she promptly flops down on her bed.

it’s nice here

dry, but nice

Uh. Thanks.

It feels nice to have her call you that again. You smile slightly, before hugging her closer and kissing the top of her forehead gently.

Yes. That’s what matters.

That’s all that matters.

..Do you remember anything about Smile..?

he was your friend wasn’t he

but he wasn’t named smile it was something else

She draws in a shaky breath, releasing it in a harsh cough.

i don’t remember a lot about him though

can we go inside maybe? my lungs kind of burn

Yeah. Used to be.

Either of them is fine.

…Yuki would be good, though.

It’s fine. Not your fault.

You swallow and look away.

..I.

I don’t know.

You can’t answer that question truthfully, so you hope she doesn’t call your bluff.

okay. yuki.

She sighs, brushing her hair out of her face. So many strange things have been revealed to her in such a short period of time.  It’s a lot to take in.

that’s ok

i’m here and you’re here and that’s what matters right

It feels like it’s been ages since you’ve been called Yuki, even though you were called it not long ago, when you were with Cleaner in the real world. You blink at her and shrug awkwardly.

..I. Can’t remember.

A bit after you died.

You can call me Yuki if you want…

You’re glad she’s recovered, so you just pat her back.

i’ll call you whatever you want to be called

i’m sorry i left you like i did

sorry that i died, rather

what does that mean…what am i right now? how am i…here

She frowns again, perplexed. If she’s dead, and she’s not in heaven and surely not in hell, where is she?

Either of them is fine.

The hug she gives you is sudden and unexpected, but appreciated. You hug her back, tears flowing freely now as you pat her back gently.

It’s okay. It’s okay, don’t worry about it.

You rub her back reassuringly, ignoring your own tears. You need to focus on making her feel better right now. The younger you walks over and hugs the two of you, although her small arms cant quite go around both of you.

She smiles tearfully at the younger Sabi, hugging her with one arm.

yuki…

that’s your name right?

She blinks up at Sabitsuki, finally recovering enough to speak again.

when did you stop being yuki and start being sabitsuki

She frowns. Maybe she’s remembering wrong.

You just look at the two of them, Oreko’s words slowly sinking into you. And now your eyes are watering. You rub them and smile at Oreko, crouching down to be at eye level at her.

Yeah.

You did.

You’re not really sure what to do right now, so you just sit there and smile and try not to cry.

She gives the younger Sabi a little squeeze before turning to hug Sabitsuki. Soon she’s bawling and gasping and apologies are pouring out of her mouth like a fountain.

i’m sorry i’m so sorry i forgot sabitsuki

Her head is spinning with all the newfound memories and lack of oxygen to her underdeveloped lungs. There are questions, so many questions that she wants to ask, but she doesn’t have it in her to ask them. She just clings to Sabitsuki and tries to pull herself together.

True. I just don’t want to strain your lungs a lot.

She waves in the direction of your little self, and you don’t expect a reaction at first, but then she’s standing there, scarf flowing in the wind, and then she bolts to Oreko and hugs her leg, babbling.

Uh.

You don’t exactly know how to explain this. You rub the back of your neck nervously, unsure of how Oreko’s going to respond to this.

She gasps when the girl suddenly materializes, even more shocked when she runs up to hug her. She glances between the child and Sabitsuki, noting the uncanny resemblance. There’s a sense of familiarity, too, and she’s not sure that it’s just due to the fact that the girl looks like a younger Sabitsuki.

i knew you…

Tears sting her eyes and she hops down to hug the little Sabi, memories suddenly flooding back. Of course she knew her. They were best friends.

She stares back at the real Sabitsuki, arms still wrapped around her younger self.

how could i forget

She frowns.

i hope i won’t get sick too

Sudden cold stings her lungs and sunlit snow burns its brightness into her eyes. Dirty smoke irritates her throat and soon she’s coughing hard with her eyes screwed shut.

Even over her coughing, her ears pick up the sound of gentle footfall, softly crunching over the snowy ground. She opens her eyes to squint at the source, knowing that neither her nor Sabi have their feet on the ground, but finds nothing but lonely footprints tracking along with no owner. She pauses her wheezing and coughing for a moment as best she can to question Sabi about the prints.

d’you see those?

I hope you don’t get sick too.

You pat her back comfortingly when she starts coughing and you sigh inwardly.

Might be a good idea to go back to your home, huh?

You notice Oreko watching the footsteps appearing in the snow, and you tense up a bit. You don’t exactly want to explain the presence of your invisible childish doppelganger.

Yeah. I do.

Just one of the people living here. Usually she’s. Just invisible. Sometimes I see her but usually she’s hiding.

but we’re adventuring.

She frowns at the suggestion of going home. Home seems rather boring and pales in comparison to all the neat places outside the water.

is she shy?

She waves hello in the general direction of where the invisibleperson seems tobe.

True. I just don’t want to strain your lungs a lot.
